Smart LAN & WiFi, 4 Channel Relay & Switch

Ethernet & WiFi controlled smart relay: 4 Relays, 4 Inputs

This device has:

  • 3 network Interfaces:
    • A LAN (Ethernet) interface: Connects to a Local Area Network (LAN) using a standard Cat5e/Cat6 cable.
    • A WiFi (Client) interface: Connects wirelessly to a nearby Access Point (AP)
    • A WiFi (AP) interface: Devices such a smart phones, laptops, ... can connect wirelessly.
Note: This product can not bridge or route between interfaces.
  • Four relays: These can be remotely controlled. They operate independently, and have three operational modes:
    1. Latching: Stays ON or OFF until next command.
    2. Jogging: Switches relay state (ON/OFF) for a chosen interval. e.g. ON->OFF->ON or OFF->ON->OFF.
Interval: 0.1 to 25.5 sec in 0.1 sec increments.
    3. Delay: Same as Jogging, except:
Interval: 1 to 65535 sec in 1 sec increments.
  • Four switch inputs: The current state is always reported via the management interfaces. Optionally, these inputs can control the relay(s).
    The inputs are either:
    1. ON: Input shorted to Ground, or
    2. OFF: Input left Open circuit (there is a pull-up resistor), or raised to the same voltage used to power the device.

Distributing Starlink

I have Starlink on my property. Now what?

We get a lot of calls from rural properties wanting to distribute the Starlink Internet from the main house to outlying buildings.

Easy!

Generally we will recommend one of our pre-configured Point-to-Multi-Point (PtMP) products.

  • Pre-configured. We do all the work of configuring up your hardware to Ubiquiti's best practice, including very strong security. All you need to do is provide mounting poles, attach the antennas, and run cables from the outside antennas to inside the buildings.
  • 120 and 360 degree coverage options.
  • Distances up to 1600 m.
  • Extends the 'main house' Internet to any number of buildings. In the outlying buildings you can then add WiFi, PCs, Cameras, monitoring equipment, ... as needed.
  • Solar options available. We can also help when the end point is has no power; e.g. a remote camera.

Keep in Mind

The radio technology used in these links requires Clear Line-of-Sight (CLOS). That means no trees/buildings/hills/... between the Basestation and Client antennas. Having said that: short distances (20m?) with some trees in the way might still work.

Exorcising snakes with Unifi Wireless

"A Catholic church in Chesapeake contacted me about fixing their WiFi. They had a new church building and an old barn that was acting as their administration building. Some ethernet wiring existed in both buildings, but it was fairly old."

A camera in a hurry

"Last minute camera installations aren't typical. I like planning and mapping things out in advance.

But then I got a very panicked phone call from a friend at 4 pm.

Her: "How fast can you setup a camera at someone's house?"

Me: "Uhhh, I have to order it first, so like, a few days or so..."

Her: "What can you do right now?"

Me: "Uhm, I've got a G4 Pro and a UdM SE for another customer..."

Hint: Troubleshooting a Broken Device

UniFi devices that appear to be broken can often be remedied by a set of simple physical checks.

Check Device Hardware

1. Confirm that your device is receiving sufficient power.
2. Replace the cable.
3. Try connecting to a different switch port.
4. Check if your device is powered on.
5. TFTP reset

UniFi Training1

UniFi Training1

In a world's first, Online training (developed in Australia) is now available for the Ubiquiti products shown.

You benefit  in a number of ways:

  • Cheaper - than attending a formal 2-day course in a classroom environment.
  • Faster - no need to wait until the next classroom course is scheduled nearby.
  • More convenient - the self-paced courses can be scheduled around other demanding work.
  • More practical - the Ubiquiti classroom courses are great for students needing to delve deep into theory such as Radio Waves, Antenna design, TDMA protocols, Link-Budgets, UniFi-WiFi site surveys, etc. But in many cases, students just want to know how to setup some very common scenarios. These Installer courses are targeted with less theory and more practice.

The way each course works is ... each student:

  • signs up and receives by email a set of detailed course notes. These can be kept as a reference document for use later on-the-job.
  • is allocated real test hardware for 7 days. This is hardware the student gets to configure (over the Internet).
  • passes an online quiz for each module. When all module quizzes have been passed, the student gets emailed a Certificate of Completion.
