Stories Of The Month
AF60-LR doesn't care about snow

"Colorado was hit with a strong storm, estimates were 16" - 42" of snow. In this area we ended up getting a couple feet of snow total; it's hard to tell exactly how much because the snow drifts are 6 feet in some areas. We have numerous 60 Ghz links in use at this point, but we have two specific locations that are fed with 60 Ghz that are considered vital.

Let's call the first location Whisky. It is a solar site with LTU rockets providing packages just under 300 Mbps to our customers while our competitors are offering 15. The site is fed from our fiber with an AF60-LR and an AF11, in case the weather gets bad. During this storm where visibility dropped to 1/8 mile, signal on the AF60-LR dropped substantially. Normally it is -54. During the storm it was -62 to -68. Capacity would bounce around and at one point I saw it down to about 600 Mbps, however it never dropped and customers were able to stay online the whole time."

The AF-60-LR is still a couple of months away, but we have the GBE-LR in stock here...

A little overkill - replacing almost 7 year old PBE-5AC-300's with GBE-LR's

"One of our first airMAX clients from almost 7 years back changed their working habits during the last year, due to the pandemic. More of their employees had to be separated between multiple buildings and the existing link with the old PowerBeam 5AC 300's didn't really perform as we wanted. Both link and bandwidth wise.

We wanted to to able to give them the best link possible and ended up with the GigaBeam LR. It was the only 60 GHz in stock and the price isn't really that bad - even if it's a bit overkill for the current link scenario. Anyways, the link is up and the speed and throughput is just perfect. Couldn't be better to be honest."

Tip: UniFi Protect - Supported camera limits by host device

This article outlines the estimates of the maximum number of supported cameras for each controller that currently hosts UniFi Protect.

The camera limits below assume typical settings and average bandwidth and are just an estimate based on internal testing. Your controller's camera limit will vary based on factors such as camera bitrate and the number of UniFi devices from other controllers (e.g., access points). Using more than the recommended number can inhibit system performance.

Online Training

The new UNMS Course has been added.

UniFi Training1

UniFi Training2

In a world's first, Online training (developed in Australia) is now available for the Ubiquiti products shown.

You benefit  in a number of ways:

  • Cheaper - than attending a formal 2-day course in a classroom environment.
  • Faster - no need to wait until the next classroom course is scheduled nearby.
  • More convenient - the self-paced courses can be scheduled around other demanding work.
  • More practical - the Ubiquiti classroom courses are great for students needing to delve deep into theory such as Radio Waves, Antenna design, TDMA protocols, Link-Budgets, UniFi-WiFi site surveys, etc. But in many cases, students just want to know how to setup some very common scenarios. These Installer courses are targeted with less theory and more practice.

The way each course works is ... each student:

  • signs up and receives by email a set of detailed course notes. These can be kept as a reference document for use later on-the-job.
  • is allocated real test hardware for 7 days. This is hardware the student gets to configure (over the Internet).
  • passes an online quiz for each module. When all module quizzes have been passed, the student gets emailed a Certificate of Completion.
