WiFi Dead Spots in the House

by Stephen Polino

WiFi Dead Spots in the House

Since moving to the new house, there have been numerous WiFi dead spots. The supplied NBN router is positioned in the center of the house offering limited range. Using the existing setup, I tried adding WiFi boosters and power line transmitters but was still faced with low reception and slow speeds.

New equipment purchased to overhaul my WiFi Setup:

1 x ER-X

1 x 10 Port GbE PoE Switch

3 x UAP-AC-Lite

3 x Recessed Ceiling Mounts

3 x 20m cables

On doing some research to fix the issues, i found that 3rd party routers can be used instead of the supplied box. It simply needed a DHCP server. The Ubiquiti ER-X perfectly suits this application, and is cheap. Secondly, I needed access points. I got the plans for the house and drew 10m radius circles on it, making sure the lines overlapped, to provide WiFi to all areas of the house.

Setting up the router was easy. Simply:

1) Update the firmware to the latest.

2) Run the wizard and select WAN+2LAN2 and select DHCP for the connection type.

3) Setup the DHCP Server

4) Change the default login password.

With the access points, these were installed and wired directly back to the Switch. Now I get the full 100Mbps everywhere in the house, including the small yard.
