PtP NLOS Radios - 15 km, 30 Mbps, 900 MHz

With this product, (plus a pair of 900 MHz Yagi antennas, not included) you can quickly install a non-Line of Sight (NLOS) Point-to-Point (PtP) network bridge link. It comes pre-configured so all you have to do is point-plug-and-play.

Applications

  • non-Line of Sight (NLOS)
  • File sharing between buildings
  • Internet/email connection extension to a remote building
  • Video surveillance using IP cameras.
  • Others ...

non Line of Sight (NLOS)

900 MHz is much better at passing through obstacles than 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. This 900 MHz product will pass through some obstacles, but each obstacle is likely to reduce the data throughput. It cannot work miracles; it is unlikely to make a link through a hill, and metal is a 100% reflector at this frequency so it will not pass through metal.

900 MHz works best when one or both antennas are well above the ground.

Real World Test

We did a real-world test of this PtP equipment. It was a less-than-ideal test as the antennas were only about 1.5m off the ground and hence a large part of the signal was trying to go through the earth. If the antennas had been mounted higher, the results would have been better.

This image shows the path.

Distance: 500 m
Trees: 11 of them (!)
Brick walls: 2 (not shown)

Setup
  • Transmit Power: 30 dBm EIRP (max. legal)
  • Centre Freq: 922 MHz
  • Channel Width: 10 MHz
Results
  • Receive Signal: -77 dBm
  • Noise Level: -102 dBm
  • Connect Speed: 39 Mbps
  • TCP/IP data throughput: 14.8 Mbps (using built-in iperf test tool)

High-capacity wireless network in Convention Centre

Victory Convention Centre boasts a bespoke 2200-seat, tiered auditorium, curving front foyer and spacious break-out rooms and hosts concerts and conferences, symposiums, and small exhibitions and expos.

WiFi was previously provided to the venue by Intellium to the foyer, breakout rooms and in the auditorium, but was limited to the stage area and desk.

Hybrid FTTH/Fixed wireless project fed by AF-5XHD

For several years the user has been discussing potential ways to feed an unserved valley. It has approximately 100 subs living in ta heavily wooded area. The rocky terrain makes it very expensive to lay fiber, and the thick trees make it very difficult to do fixed wireless.

They installed a 50' pole at the entrance to the valley which has Line of Sight to a tower 7.5 miles away. They decided to use AF5XHD's with 34dbi dishes.

UniFi Training1

UniFi Training2

In a world's first, Online training (developed in Australia) is now available for the Ubiquiti products shown.

You benefit  in a number of ways:

  • Cheaper - than attending a formal 2-day course in a classroom environment.
  • Faster - no need to wait until the next classroom course is scheduled nearby.
  • More convenient - the self-paced courses can be scheduled around other demanding work.
  • More practical - the Ubiquiti classroom courses are great for students needing to delve deep into theory such as Radio Waves, Antenna design, TDMA protocols, Link-Budgets, UniFi-WiFi site surveys, etc. But in many cases, students just want to know how to setup some very common scenarios. These Installer courses are targeted with less theory and more practice.

The way each course works is ... each student:

  • signs up and receives by email a set of detailed course notes. These can be kept as a reference document for use later on-the-job.
  • is allocated real test hardware for 7 days. This is hardware the student gets to configure (over the Internet).
  • passes an online quiz for each module. When all module quizzes have been passed, the student gets emailed a Certificate of Completion.
