Operating in the 5 GHz band, the airFiber-5 builds on the innovations in airFiber-24 to enable aggregate speeds up to 1 Gbps and introduces new eXtended Range Technology (xRT) to provide long range connections.
Technical Description
airFiber-5 features a dual-independent 2x2 MIMO 5 GHz hi-gain reflector antenna system that can operate in both FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) and HDD (Hybrid Division Duplex) modes for unparalleled speed and spectral efficiency in the 5GHz
class-license LIPD band. With speeds up to 1Gbps and long range, airFiber-5 is a versatile option for many backhaul and building-to-building applications.
Comparison
The chart below summarises the difference between the airFiber-5 and standard airMAX 5 GHz technology. Both are long range technologies, but over distances less than 15 km, the AF-5 is faster.

Minimum Distance
The minimum distance between Master and Slave ends of the link depends on model:
- airFiber5 - 10 meters
- airFiber 24 and 24HD - 25 meters (using firmware 2.0 or higher)
Recommended Surge Protector

GbE POE Surge Protector
This in-line surge protector is suitable for use with the Ubiquiti airFiber.
From the airFiber User Guide:
|
Note: For added protection, we recommend installing two GigE PoE surge protectors. Install the first surge protector within one meter of the airFiber DATA port, and install the second surge protector at the ingress point of the location housing the wired network equipment. |
|
This surge protector is used in-line on a Cat5/Cat5e connection, and is used to help protect:
- ethernet interface damage in the event of nearby lightning storms, and
- building damage in the event of a direct lightning strike where a current surge flows down the ethernet cable.
