Ubiquiti 24V POE Explained

Many, but not all, Ubiquiti products are powered by non-standard 24V Power-over-Ethernet (POE).

  • Non-Standard: Common POE standards uses 48V DC. Ubiquiti chose to use 24V instead for their airMaxtm product range to keep costs down.
Applying 48V POE to a 24V device will invariably cause it to 'blow'.
  • Pins: All 24V POE Ubiquiti products will always use ethernet pins 4,5 for the +24V DC, and pins 7,8 for the return.
  • Passive: Passive POE means that the POE power supply always puts voltage on the pins. The more intelligent ('active') 802.3af/at POE power supplies will not put POE voltage on the pins unless the powered device signals that it is prepared to accept 48V. All the 24V POE devices listed here are Passive.
