Home office and student apartment network

"How did I get to Ubiquiti? Two years ago, just after I've bought a house to renovate, I've asked colleagues about the best options for home IT-installations without the need to spend the amounts we do at work. On top, I wanted a solution without yearly fees. During those discussions, Ubiquiti was one of the options that came up and after I've looked through the options and available hardware, I decided to give Ubiquiti a try."

Tip: UniFi - Guest Network, Guest Portal, and Hotspot System

This article explains how to configure a guest network, guest portal, and hotspot system if desired. It is important to note the differences between these three.

Guest Networks exist independently from the Guest Portal and/or Hotspot System, which are built-in tools for guest authentication, authorization & accounting. A user on a guest network will face different access restrictions from those faced by the trusted, "corporate" users on default UniFi networks. An administrator can create a guest network, but not enable the guest portal for authentication, or the hotspot, which is a guest management system for free or paid use of the network. On the other hand, to use a guest portal or hotspot system, a guest network must be enabled and configured. This article will explain how to configure all three.

New course: UniFi V6 - Course 1

UniFi Training1

UniFi Training2

In a world's first, Online training (developed in Australia) is now available for the Ubiquiti products shown.

You benefit  in a number of ways:

  • Cheaper - than attending a formal 2-day course in a classroom environment.
  • Faster - no need to wait until the next classroom course is scheduled nearby.
  • More convenient - the self-paced courses can be scheduled around other demanding work.
  • More practical - the Ubiquiti classroom courses are great for students needing to delve deep into theory such as Radio Waves, Antenna design, TDMA protocols, Link-Budgets, UniFi-WiFi site surveys, etc. But in many cases, students just want to know how to setup some very common scenarios. These Installer courses are targeted with less theory and more practice.

The way each course works is ... each student:

  • signs up and receives by email a set of detailed course notes. These can be kept as a reference document for use later on-the-job.
  • is allocated real test hardware for 7 days. This is hardware the student gets to configure (over the Internet).
  • passes an online quiz for each module. When all module quizzes have been passed, the student gets emailed a Certificate of Completion.
