Ubiquiti Rocket-M

Used by both Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) and companies needing to distribute an IP connection over distances up to 30 km, these Rocket products are designed to be matched with a separate antenna to suit a variety of needs.

The M series products can achieve nearly 150 Mbps TCP/IP traffic over the radio links, but are generally limited to 100 Mbps over the Ethernet port; plenty fast enough for most NBN style connections. For faster connections, consider the Rocket AC product range.

Ubiquiti Rocket M5

This has been one of Ubiquiti's biggest selling products. It is a 5 GHz, POE powered radio with antenna connectors, allowing the user to choose from a number of compatible airMAX antennas offering different antenna patterns with beamwidths from 360 degrees ("omni") to a few degrees ("Directional").

Ubiquiti Rocket M2

Similar to the RocketM5, this is the 2.4 GHz version.

Things to Look For

  • Band: 2.4 & 5 GHz bands are common WiFi bands and need no special licensing. But they are subject to interference from neighbours and have moderately low transmit power limits due to the communal nature of the band. Other frequencies (e.g. 3 GHz) are licensed bands, and after being granted such a license, the transmit powers are generally higher, and an interference-free network is guaranteed.
  • Antenna choice: All Rockets can operate in either basestation (AP) mode or client (station) mode. Choose wide-beam (Omni or sector) antennas to create a basestation accepting multiple incoming links. Choose narrow-beam (directional) antennas to point back to either a basestation (as part of a MultiPoint network), or another narrow-beam antenna (as part of a point-to-point link).
